Valer Akos Tamaris is a necromancer who almost never fights himself: the dead do it for him. He is in no more of a hurry in battle than in business, and lies no more facing a blade than across a table. You find him only if he has decided so, and you never corner him anywhere he has not planned a way out.Appearance
You spot him. He is waiting for you in the middle of a hall where nothing moves. Around him stand still shapes you had taken for statues, tomb effigies, heaps of bones. He speaks first, in a cavernous, level voice, and tells you exactly what will happen if you come any closer. The dead around him wait for the end of his sentence, as you do.The Trap. A dead man stands before you. He slowly lifts his head, and his vertebrae crack one after another like wet wood. He falls at the first blow, but two others have already taken his place. Your blades swing, your spells burst, and five become ten, ten become twenty, until you can no longer tell which bodies the arms reaching for you belong to. Then everything stops. The dead freeze together mid-motion, their hands still open toward you. In that silence, a voice rises behind you, calm, unhurried, and offers to talk. When you turn around, he is there, and he has been there from the start.Combat
How he fights. He lets his dead do the work and keeps his distance, watchful, the way one studies an opponent before making him an offer. His orders pass through no word: the dead move together, without a cry or a moment's hesitation, and throw themselves at whoever most threatens his plans. He rarely seeks to kill, because the living in his service are worth far more to him than corpses. So he drives his opponents into a situation with no way out, then opens the negotiation, answers every question exactly, and names his price, which will have nothing to do with what is at stake. When the outcome turns against him, he vanishes, and the Ordo has never learned how.How to fight him. His dead obey what he wears more than the man himself: take it from him and you set them free, and masterless dead no longer tell him apart from you. His candor is a weapon for anyone who knows how to ask the right question, provided they can bear the answer. Capturing him is worth ten thousand crowns, and few who have tried lived long enough to understand why the sum is set so high. Often, accepting his price remains the only way to leave.
