The Whetting Belt
"An edge is earned each evening, when no one is watching."Nothing on it cuts, and yet it is what keeps weapons alive: the two-grit stone, the steel that straightens the edge without biting into it, the soft leather for polishing, the flask of oil and the cloth that hold rust at bay. Every tool has its loop, its place, its own particular wear.Whoever wears it does not trust to luck. He knows a blade betrays only once, and always at the worst moment, for want of a care he thought he could put off until tomorrow. Courage sometimes lies in a slow gesture, repeated by the fire, long after the others have fallen asleep.
