The Grappling Hook
Everyone owns one. Heavy, bulky, it weighs down the bottom of the pack, and you curse it on every wall you climb.
And then one day, someone thinks.
Climbing? That's the bare minimum. Thrown low, it catches the leg of a fleeing monster and pins it to the ground. Hitched to an ox, it tears a grate loose. Stretched across a corridor, it mows down a charge. It pulls down whatever hangs out of reach, anchors a rope above the void, disarms with one sharp pull, hauls a body out of a pit. With bait on the end, it would even make a decent hook for a kraken.
Now find as many uses for a longsword.
It cuts. It stabs. It hits with the pommel, if you insist. That's all.
