Lavinia Ardwyn, the Harmless One
The kings and dukes of the realm deal with Lavinia Ardwyn, Provost of the Scarlet Tower (an order of mage-observers and spies whose emblem is an eye). Three other mages of equal rank secretly govern the order alongside her. When her predecessor died, they chose her for her bearing and her love of books, because she seemed to have no ambition. In twenty years, she has woven a network so vast that the Tower can no longer do without her. The other three are waiting for her to step down. Every evening, she writes letters by hand, and no one knows the full list of her correspondents.
Describe Her
She is the last to enter, and everyone rises without anyone having decided to. Her gait is slow and measured, without a single wasted step. She greets each of you according to your rank, and never gets it wrong. Her voice is low and steady, and never needs to rise to be heard. She smells of ink and sealing wax. When she isn’t speaking, she reads, a grimoire or an armorial, and looks up at the precise moment someone says something important.Play Her
Greet each player according to their rank, and let the one who has none feel that she noticed. Speak slowly. Never ask for money. When a player wants an audience, a letter of recommendation, or an open door, grant it, then note aloud the small favor they’ll owe her later. She knows the grandfather of every noble named in her presence, and the exact rank of his house. The thread to hold throughout: her word binds the Tower only if the Tower’s Tongue signs, and she takes good care never to say so.
What She Says (Rarely)
“Your house lost that title three generations ago. I tell you as a friend.”
“Keep your gold. One day I’ll ask you for a favor, and you’ll say yes.”
“(without looking up from her book) Go on, I’m listening. That was the interesting part.”
