Ithrael Morvaen, the Price of Passage
Ithrael Morvaen trades in salt, tar, and other people’s cargo, and he knows the routes that link them better than any captain, by sea or by land. He also sells passage aboard, with insurance: if the ship never arrives, the traveler or their family gets their money back. The deal holds because every season he pays the pirate captains to let his ships through, and a pirate’s word is worth exactly as much as the next payment. He has paid out only once. Before every departure, he walks down to the dock to shake the captain’s hand, then stares at the horizon for a long time.
Describe Him
He greets you in a soft voice that never rises and has you seated before he asks your name. He smells of cedar chests and fresh ink. He measures distance in days at sea and in tides. He names a price, then falls silent and lets the silence work for him. Other elves, who keep their faces still, think he smiles far too much.Play Him
Sit down before the players do and let them talk. Give each price once, then stop talking. When they need a route, unroll a map and offer three: the fast one, the safe one, and the one that passes through a port where he has business to settle. If they sail insured, remember that the peace he bought from the pirates lasts only as long as the money keeps coming and no captain finds a better offer elsewhere. His interest is simple: every cargo that arrives pays him, every shipwreck costs him, and he’ll do whatever it takes to get the players safely to port.
What He Says (Rarely)
“Three weeks along the coast, nine days across open water. Open water costs more.”
“Insured, you arrive. If not, your widow comes to my counter.”
“(smiling, quill already dipped) Pirates keep their word. It’s their price that changes.”
